Born in the Netherlands, Lawrence Alma-Tadema received his knighthood at the court of England's Queen Victoria. Reflecting his academic studies in classical languages and Latin history, Alma-Tadema's art depicts Roman opulence with Victorian sensibilities, combining the playful debauchery of the old world with the traditional morality of the new. His pieces are currently archived at the Bristol Museum and Tate Gallery of England.
