Though lesser known than his contemporaries
George Grosz and Raoul
Hausmann, Jean Arp was no less involved a member of the Dadaist
Cabaret Voltaire. Arp's pieces were unassuming and rather subdued
compared to the riotous work of other Dadaists. The wood relief
"Leaves and Navels, I" is notable for its complete
lack of color contrasts. Rather, oblong and circular shapes inhabit
a pale gray background, at random and at a loss for critical
interpretation.
