- Typical among Italian Renaissance artists
for his religious themes, Alesso Baldovinetti used irregularities
in dimension to convey symbolism. In his widely known "Virgin
and Child" (currently on display at the Louvre in Paris),
the Christ-child is depicted as inordinately tiny compared to
the virgin mother hovering above. This disparity in size conveys
a sense of nurturing between mother and child, as well as a philosophical
affirmation of the Virgin's sanctity.
