- Few artists of the modern era have demonstrated
as wide a diversity in style as France's Balthus. Though his
theme has rarely strayed from the nude or semi-nude portrait,
Balthus has varied his technique and style in obvious, discernible
ways to suit each painting. Whereas the exotic "Japanese
Girl with Red Table" bears the mark of Far Eastern artistic
influences (elongated body frame, pale color shading, faded background),
the more traditional "Nude at Rest" pays homage to
the native French tradition of nude painting.
