- Pompeo Batoni was the most renowned Italian
portrait artist of the 18th century. Serving at the courts of
Europe's wealthy and aristocratic, his art reflects the decadent,
bourgeois opulence of the time. Batoni's likeness of the English
nobleman Thomas William Coke (on display at Holkham Hall in Norfolk,
England) is typical of his style, emphasizing materialism over
spiritual symbolism.
