- A contemporary of Monet, Frederic Bazille
achieved prominence at an early age with the stunning "Pink
Dress." The painting, a balcony view of Montpelier, France,
remains one of the great masterworks of European art, combining
depth and subtlety with a grand scope. Tragically, Bazille would
not live to see his acclaim spread. Enlisting as a soldier in
the Franco-Prussian War, he died at the age of 29, only six years
after the completion of his finest piece.
