- Max Beckmann painted horrifying images
with a sense of humor. German in both nationality and disposition,
Beckmann's early 20th century work defied narrative explanation.
His dozens of self-portraits combine simple realism with hilarious
exaggerations of form: the Neanderthal brow and effeminate stance
in "Self-Portrait in Tuxedo" serve as the most immediate
example. Still, it is Beckmann's "Journey on the Fish"
that truly defies analysis. In this strange, completely original
piece, haunting imagery of two lovers plummeting into the sea
juxtaposes against an absurdist backdrop of giant fishes.
