Pierre Bonnard's extensive use of color
made him both unique and controversial. While ostensibly Post-Impressionist,
pieces such as "Nude in Bathtub" border on Surreal
in their rejection of pure realism in favor of a hazy, dreamlike
quality. From Bonnard's perspective, painting involved more than
representing the precise dimensions of the physical world: for
the true artist, it was necessary to see beyond simple reality
and into the strange, chromatic, often abstract realm of the
spiritual.
