Georges Braque was the most accomplished
French Cubist of his era, a rival of Picasso who, unlike the
Spanish artist, stopped painting to enlist during the First World
War. Tragically, Braque suffered a head injury in combat and
his talents waned in the subsequent years. His body of pre-war
art, however, seals Braque's legacy as a challenging, exciting
painter. Pieces such as the austere "Clarinet and Bottle
of Rum on a Mantelpiece" are complete originals, as awe-inspiring
today as they had been decades ago, when the century was still
young.
