Born in 1858, Lovis Corinth was a popular
German portraitist. Among his many renowned works are several
dozen self portraits (one painted each year on the artist's birthday),
and the allegory piece "Samson Blinded," an allusion
to Corinth's stroke at the age of fifty-three. Painting on both
canvas and cardboard (an unusual medium for portraits), Corinth's
works are now housed at the Staatliche and Kuntsmuseum in Germany,
among other galleries and museums.
