| As the French
philosopher Isidore Isou once wrote, "Art without politics
is decoration." Salvador Dali not only put this ideal to
practice, he embodied it. Against the backdrop of some of the
20th Century's most ominous events (the rise of fascism in western
Europe, the Spanish Civil War), Dali created some of the most
controversial and scandalous works in the canon of Western art.
The most renowned artist of the Surrealist school, Dali brought
fantasy to realism and reality to the fantastic. His most renowned
works (the overtly political Premonition of Civil War,
the alluringly personal Seated Girl Seen From the Rear)
fix concrete, detailed characters in shifting, magical settings. |
