A leading critic of the Rococo school of
art, Jacques-Louis David became a leader of the Neo-Classical
movement. During and after the French Revolution, the Neo-Classical
painters used a more realistic style of expression, reminiscent
of the early master artists of the Renaissance. David's most
controversial and famous piece, "The Death of Marat,"
depicts the assassinated revolutionary as a national martyr.
In later years, David would also spark criticism for his heroic
depictions of Napolean.
