Born in the Netherlands in 1904 and active
in the United States until his death in 1997, Willem De Kooning
was the quintessential abstract painter. Amidst the wide, messy
brush strokes of his pieces, one can faintly make out recognizable
forms and shapes. However, De Kooning's abstract style did not
keep him from relying on some traditional conventions: in his
use of bright colors and light, he has been compared to the traditional
Dutch artist Vermeer.
