An essentially Spatialist painter, Lucio
Fontana's work emphasized empty space over form and content.
The 1962 piece "Spatial Concept" features a blue canvas
ripped open in seven vertical slashes. By rejecting the physical
integrity of the canvas itself, Fontana is suggesting the greater
significance of the world behind, around and outside the painting
(i.e., the physical world outside of art).
