FRANKENTHALER, HELEN

DIGITOGRAPH™ GALLERY #596

Helen Frankenthaler's best known and most outrageous work was created completely without the aid of easel or paint brush. The piece, "Mountains and Sea," is the result of a process in which the artist poured paint onto a canvas in random splotches and stains. In spite of the chaos of its creation, "Mountains and Sea" does seem to reflect its title: a large backdrop of earthen shades suggesting mountains near a small spot of blue ocean. As Frankenthaler describes this near coincidental relationship between the title and the abstract painting itself, "the landscapes were in my arms as I painted."

Paintings Available by Helen Frankenthaler:
Mountains and Sea, 1952.
