The Dadaists' great distinction was in
their merging of art with everyday life. In photo-collages, absurdist
paintings, nonsense songs and rhetoric, Dada founded a tradition
of political "anti-art" from the ashes of post-World
War I Europe. George Grosz's "Berlin Streetscene" and
other Dadaist works parodied the selfish, amoral social atmosphere
of his time. In Grosz pieces, urban life is drawn as a horrid,
unnatural existence, regulated by consumerism and the spectacle
of false pleasures derived from a capitalist economy.
