Born in Canada in 1913, Philip Guston rose
to become one of the most prominent Abstract artists of his time,
only to abandon the style in favor of a hybrid Realism in which
objective and subjective themes inhabited the same canvas. The
resulting paintings were as decidedly confused as their painter,
but beautiful and endearing nonetheless. The charming piece "Sleeping,"
thought to be a self-portrait, uses abstract techniques to exaggerate
the sleeping subject's face and eyes, while drawing its feet
and legs in a very detailed, realistic manner. The contradiction
in this piece reflects the contradictory impulses in Guston's
own mind.
