Austrian Raoul Hausmann was the most incisive
and scathing of the early Dada artists. Like Hugo Ball before
him and graphic artist Jamie Reed after, Hausmann had a sense
of the public consciousness embedded in private life. His collage
and photo-montage pieces were overtly political monstrosities
worthy of Dali: human faces meshed with currency notes, limbs
replaced by newspaper clippings, clothing stitched together with
advertisements, product labels, fascist slogans, the detritus
of commodities and worthless consumer goods. Abandoning art and
the fading Dada movement in 1923, Hausmann left behind a body
of work that intrigues, provokes and remains as relevant to social
life today as ever.
