While living in Switzerland in
the late 1930s, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner became the victim of a
Nazi purge in absentia, as many of his works were confiscated
or destroyed by Hitler's regime. In 1938, when the tides of war
began to sweep Europe, Kirchner committed suicide in the throes
of tuberculosis; a tragic end to a conflicted life. Kirchner's
art, much of it combining the soft, bright color tones of the
Expressionists with Dadaism's disdain for modern life, remains
a source of controversy and debate.
