Like many of his generation,
Paul Klee's life and work were deeply affected by the horrors
of Nazism. Having to flee his career teaching art in Germany,
Klee returned to his native Switzerland and emerged as a completely
different artist. Klee's later work evoked a greater sense of
cynicism, despair and disgust at the world. The dark imagery
he used for pieces such as "Death and Fire" stood in
stark contrast to the joy and lightheartedness of earlier works.
In addition, Klee's later work made use of darker shades and
neutrals over bright, pale colors.
