- Abstract art has long been criticized
for its seeming incoherence and lack of realistic symbolism.
The work of American abstract expressionist Franz Kline does
not refute this critique so much as revel in it. His finest and
most renowned paintings are often little more than thick lines
and simple shapes on broad, light-colored backgrounds. Using
minimal color and pattern motifs, Kline emphasizes the tension
between empty space and solid objects.
