August Macke died in combat during the
early years of the First World War. In the year of his death
and the year preceding it, he completed his finest works, among
them "Promenade" and "Garden on Lake of Thun."
These pieces, the summation of a tragically short life and career,
are masterpieces of pure color: the fleshy pink of human forms
bleeding into dark suits and bowler hats, the light blue-tinged
sky merging with the earthen shades of trees and dirt. Macke's
works suggest a quiet, reflective serenity in life; one that
the artist himself, shot dead after the completion of "Promenade,"
could not live to experience.
