By far Michelangelo's greatest work was
the illustration of the Sistine Chapel. Having studied under
mentor and friend Domenico Ghirlandaio in Florence, Michelangelo
uses the fresco technique to full effect in this series. The
frescoes that adorn the high walls and ceiling of this ancient
cathedral remain one of Italy's great historical treasures. If
one can find a theme of any sort prevalent in the Chapel project,
it is the separation of man from God, an idea best expressed
in "The Creation of Man." The central aspect of "Creation,"
Adam's outstretched arm reaching vainly to make contact with
his Creator, expresses a more complete sense of the tragedy and
beauty of mankind's fall from grace than any art work before
or since.
