A Norwegian artist of the late 19th and
early 20th centuries, Edvard Munch used the vague, curving brushstrokes
of the Post-Impressionist technique to evoke feelings of despair,
longing and regret. A tragic childhood, punctuated by the deaths
of Munch's mother and elder sister, left the artist with a sense
of hopelessness which his life's work would only further validate.
However, in spite of his brooding tendencies, and much like his
legendary contemporary Vincent Van Gogh, Munch captured the sensuality
of the human form in subtle, repressed color tones and flowing
curves. Perhaps his finest single piece, "The Madonna"
uses the form a sleeping nude to express a deeply melancholy
sexuality.
