Born in France, Georges Rouault was distinct
among Expressionists for his emphasis on religious themes. Painting
in a style more similar to stained-glass art than Abstract Expressionism,
Rouault outlines his figures in thick, bold lines, forcing his
vague images to take concrete shapes. His groundbreaking "Christ
on a Cross" was painted in aquatint on a thick paper surface,
breaking with the oil-on-canvas routine prevalent in our age.
- Paintings Available by Georges Rouault:
- Christ on the Cross, 1936.
- The Old King, 1937.
