Following the example of his mentor Georges
Seurat, Paul Signac painted in a style in which individual dots
of color cohered before the eye to form an overall image. This
"pointillism" technique (sometimes referred to as "divisionism")
gave an eerie, silent quality to Signac's pieces, a sense that
the painting is somehow alive with the motion of myriad dots.
Signac became more forceful in his pointillism towards the end
of his life, perhaps a reflection of Cubist influence.
- Paintings Available by Paul Signac:
- Gas Tanks at Clichy, 1886.
- The Papal Palace, Avignon, 1900.
