Kees Van Dongen painted flat, one-dimensional
Expressionist works that substituted intensity in color tone
for depth and perspective. Late in life, he began working as
a portraitist on commission for wealthy clientele, a career move
that earned him a fair degree of criticism. Nonetheless, Van
Dongen's status as arguably the finest Expressionist portrait
painter has only been strengthened by time.
