Mentored by his art dealer uncles from
an early age, Vincent Van Gogh's work challenged both the nascent
Symbolist and Neo-Impressionist traditions of his time. Unlike
many of his contemporaries, Van Gogh was a largely self-taught
artist. As a result, his work evokes a powerful connection with
the primal, instinctive and basic tendencies of human life. Van
Gogh charted an independent path from the artistic community
surrounding him, always commanding respect, never groveling for
admiration.
